Last year I rekindled my interest in snakes and managed to find two grassies, one mature, one little bootlace and two common lizards, all on the same site. It's a small reserve (9 hectares) in East Hertfordshire. This year I cannot find a thing. The wildlife trust trimmed a lot of the growth back, but still looks OK as habitat. Is it me or is it possible there were only a few animals here in the first place? Anyone got any confirmed sites in Herts for me to go to please??

Hi Ginger

Sorry you had such bad luck.  In my  opinion, Herts is a funny county for reptiles, I read somewhere that Adders are practically extinct there, on the other hand, most of the Grassies seem to crop up closest to London and away from the deeper countryside.

There are a string of lakes and reservoirs that extend south of Cassiobury Park in Watford, through Rickmansworth and in to S. Bucks around the Denham region that are really good for Grassies, however.
